lossy, simple, Alnus-like leaves make this Asian native an unusual mountain ash species relative to most others which have pinnately compound leaves. Alder-leaved whitebeam is a small to medium-sized deciduous tree that originates from the slopes, mixed forests and thickets of China, Taiwan, Korea and Japan. It is a handsome landscape tree that maintains a pyramidal habit when young and rounded canopy when older. Like most ash trees, it offers multi-seasonal interest with attractive spring flowers, pleasing fall fruit and appealing stark winter bark. The red, berry-like pomes it produces are also edible and can be used to produce tasty jelly.
The deciduous, rich green leaves of alder-leaved whitebeam turn lovely shades of gold and orange in fall. Corymbs with 6 to 25 dusky white flowers are produced in spring. These develop into attractive, slightly oblong, berry-like pomes that turn shades of red in late-summer or fall. Birds relish the fruits. In winter, the lightly bumpy, greyish bark offers stark visual appeal.
Plant the European mountain ash in full sun to partial shade. It will tolerate a wide range of soil types with average to good drainage. It is quite cold tolerant but will not thrive where summers are hot and humid for extended periods of time. For best fall foliage color, water trees during substantial periods of summer drought. Plant in the landscape as a small shade tree or lawn specimen.
This is a markedly disease resistant whitebeam that will stand up to bacterial fireblight, cankers and borers better than most other cultivated species. (info source: Learn2Grow.com)

Useful Info
Germination1. Soak the seeds overnight in warm water. Mix the seeds with just a little bit moist vermiculite or moist sterile soil. Place the seeds in airtight plastic bag and store them in the refrigerator for at least two months.
2. Sow 1mm deep in the soil and keep moist in bright and warm place till teh germination.
Or
2. Select a planting site for seeds outside in full sun, as they do not tolerate shade. This tree prefers fertile soil, but can tolerate poor soil. Mix sufficient peat moss into the soil to lower its pH to between 4.7 and 6.0.
3. Scatter the seeds thinly over the planting site in early fall or winter. Press the seeds lightly onto the soil without covering them.
4. Water the seeds with 1 to 2 inches of water per week, beginning after the last expected frost. The seedlings require consistently moist soil while growing, and the mature trees do not tolerate drought.
Seedlings do not generally require special protection from insects or disease.(source: ehow.com)
