A tough plant that adapts well to urban conditions. Not particularly showy, but easy to grow and effective in shrub borders, as a hedge, woodland gardens, foundations or difficult shade areas.
An open-branched, mounding, deciduous shrub which typically grows 3-6' tall. Features ovate, serrate, medium green leaves and white, 4-petaled, 2" diameter flowers. Flowers appear in late spring to early summer and give way to glossy, jet black, bead-like berries in groups of 3-4 which mature in fall and persist throughout the winter. No appreciable fall color. Useful Info
Germination1. Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours.
2. Startify for 60-90 days in dampened peat, sand or vermiculite, in a plastic box or bag at +4C or +5C in a refrigerator. The seeds should not be frozen or in a wet medium.
3. Sow about 1mm deep in a Peaty seed sowing mix at about +15C.
Rhodotypos scandens seeds will usually germinate in 30-90 days, even under good conditions germination may be erratic.
Normally will only germinate with light, GA-3 may promote germination - even in the dark.
